Industries that grew during the pandemic

A lot of businesses were hurt by the pandemic, especially retail stores, restaurants and education-based ones, with the effects still being felt. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the entire economy got destroyed, as there are actually some industries that managed to grow industries during the pandemic.

It’s the business owners and management that were smart enough to pivot, as they knew that they couldn’t keep going on the same path. Instead, they had to take a step back and make some major changes, both from an organizational and strategic planning standpoint, and that’s exactly what they did.

Those types of aforementioned businesses are ones that simply rebranded themselves, and were creative enough to think on the fly, and prosper. But there are others that were simply lucky enough to, all of a sudden, have their product or service in demand, and we’re going to discuss a number of them.

First and foremost is the cleaning products or cleaning services industry, because as soon as the pandemic hit, everyone — both business and personal — was in need of antibacterial products to minimize their chances of contracting the coronavirus. Hand sanitizer, toilet paper, soap, rubbing alcohol, vinegar, paper towels, tissues were suddenly hot commodities that were selling like hot cakes at grocery stores, markets, gas stations and convenience stores. They’d come off the shelves virtually as quick as they were put on, and it created quite a frenzy earlier this year. Some of these products are still difficult to come by. And in that same breath, cleaning services also thrived — and continue to — as well.

Activewear, fitness products and vehicles that can be used for outdoor leisure have also benefited greatly. Bicycles are at the top of that demand list, as manufacturers still can’t keep away with the number of orders coming their way. Many people are wary of public transit, so instead, they’re using bicycles to get around. Bikes can also be enjoyed as social distancing-friendly fitness vehicles, and given that gyms were closed for quite some time — with many people still avoiding them — this trend doesn’t appear to be dying down anytime soon. The same goes for exercise bands, free weights, exercise equipment and other fitness-related products, so people can work out in the comfort of their own home, or outside.

E-commerce has also seen quite a boom. And this obviously isn’t a surprise, as people may not feel safe shopping inside in retail stores, but they have no issue buying products from the comfort of their own home, and having them delivered to their doorstep.
It will be interesting to see how long these industries can continue to thrive going forward during the pandemic.
