Perianal tumors most commonly arise from the glands or from the anal sacs; however certain kinds of tumors can develop from other perianal regions. Perianal tumors are primarily 2 different types. First is a benign tumor called an adenoma, and second is a malignant (cancerous) tumor called an adenocarcinoma.
How is a perianal gland tumor treated?
For perianal adenocarcinomas, the treatment of choice is complete surgical excision of the tumor (sometimes with removal of the nearby lymph nodes) and neutering. Radiation or chemotherapy is recommended for these types of tumors. With successful therapy, the high blood calcium level will return to normal.

Large tumors may necessitate removal of additional tissue surrounding the mass. In 50% of the canine cases of Apocrine Gland Adenocarcinoma, enlarged lymph nodes are found in the abdomen.
