Is histiocytic sarcoma a round cell tumor?
Background/Aim: Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) represents a group of malignant canine tumors to which Bernese Mountain Dogs (BMD) and Flatcoated Retrievers (FCR) are predisposed. The differential diagnosis for HS is broad, encompassing round cell tumors, sarcomas and other histiocytic diseases.
What does round cell tumor mean?
One of the more confusing times in an oncology examination room is describing what a “round cell tumor” is to a pet owner. The term is broad and describes myriad tumors that appear cytologically or histologically as a monotonous population of undifferentiated cells with high nuclear to cytoplasmic ratios.
Can round cell tumors be benign?
Cutaneous round cell tumors range from potentially self-resolving benign lesions (canine cutaneous histiocytoma) to aggressive malignancies (cutaneous lymphoma). While distinction between these entities is often relatively clear-cut, cell of origin may not be immediately obvious on histopathology.
Are mast cell tumors flat?
Unfortunately, mast cell tumors do not have a characteristic form. Their appearance can vary greatly and they can be big, small, firm, soft, raised, flat, covered with hair or ulcerated. They can be found anywhere on the skin’s surface: on a leg, the chest, head, or abdomen.
What are the 5 types of round cell tumors?
Round cell tumors fall into a few different categories: mast cell tumor, histiocytoma, lymphoma, plasmacytoma, and transmissible venereal tumors. Melanomas are the cytologic “great pretender” and, although classified as mesenchymal tumors, can appear as round cell tumors on cytology.
What does round cells in sperm mean?
Round cells can be immature sperm, debris (junk), or white blood cells (WBC’s). This number is usually reported as a concentration of round cells, ie how many round cells there are, in millions, per cc. of the ejaculate. Round cell concentrations of greater than one million per cc, may be significant (see below.)
Which of the following is classified as a round cell tumor?
What is normal sperm analysis report?
A semen analysis tests for the following: number of sperm (volume) shape of sperm….Semen analysis results table.
|WHO reference range|
|Total sperm count in ejaculate||39–928 million|
|Ejaculate volume||1.5–7.6 mL|
|Sperm concentration||15–259 million per mL|
|Total motility (progressive and non-progressive)||40–81 percent|
What kind of cancer does a Flat Coated Retriever have?
The tumor in question in flat-coated retrievers is called undifferentiated sarcoma of flat-coated retrievers. It has some histiocytic characteristics and has been diagnosed in the past as malignant histiocytosis, histiocytic sarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, or histiocytic lymphoma.
What kind of dog is at risk for malignant histiocytosis?
Malignant histiocytosis originally was reported in 10 male and one female Bernese mountain dogs.56 Nine of the dogs were closely related, which suggests a genetic predisposition. However, other breeds also are at risk, including the rottweiler and golden retriever. 57–60 Most patients are middle aged (range, 4 to 10 years; mean, 7 years).
How are staging tests done for lymphoma in dogs?
Some veterinarians recommend “staging tests” following a lymphoma diagnosis to determine how far the disease has progressed throughout the dog’s body. These tests help veterinarians understand your dog’s overall condition, as well as the cancer, and include blood tests, urinalysis, x-rays, abdominal sonograms, and bone marrow aspiration.
