Lyoto Carvalho Machida (born May 30, 1978 in Salvador, Brazil) is a Japanese-Brazilian professional mixed martial arts fighter. Son of a Japanese-Brazilian Shotokan karate master Yoshizo Machida, Lyoto is considered by many to be a rising star in MMA, having secured victories over former UFC Middleweight champion Rich Franklin, former UFC Welterweight champion B.J. Penn, former PRIDE Fighting Championship superstar Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Light Heavyweight runner-up of the UFC's The Ultimate Fighter 1, Stephan Bonnar.

Machida is noted for his semi-orthodox fighting style. As a karate practitioner, Machida uses an unorthodox (or southpaw) stance.

Machida currently fights out of Black House with such fighters as UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva, former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

Machida is currently scheduled to fight against superstar Tito Ortiz on May 24, 2008 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Comments:

“He’s very elusive and it was tough to chase him down, he’s a great fighter.” - Tito Ortiz

“Sokoujou got his face rearranged. Tito ortiz will need a good plastic surgeon soon.” - Coultrane

“Lyoto has made every person he has fought in the ufc look bad so far, can he do the same with soko?” --anonymous

“I believe Machida is one of the most exciting fighters to watch because of his unbelievable ability in so many areas. He's had fights with decent opposition recently in Hogar, Heath and Nakamura, yet he made all of them look very very below par.

The mixture of ultra-disciplined karate, sumo, bjj and what looks like some Aikido is proving to be a unbeatable combination.” --anonymous

Lyoto Machida has been training since he was a small child. Find out why some see him as the future of the sport at 205lbs.

mmayou.com: Which of the new generation of fighters do you enjoy watching?

Gracie: Man, the last two fights that I saw and I watched and I told everybody, “that was a school on strategy” was Lyoto Machida against Tito Ortiz and BJ Penn when he fought in the same UFC. Man that was a school in strategy. Both of them! BJ Penn and Lyoto man. The fighters that they fought, they’re very tough, they’re very good, they’ve been in the top game for a while but those two just pulled out strategy man. A lot of people don’t use strategy, they just come in and duke it out, be a tough… But those two on that night they showed strategy. That was a school in strategy right there. I appreciate that.
