Lyoto Recovering from Bone Spurs

Lyoto is recovering from surgery on his left hand, due to bone spurs.  The bone spurs cased great pain in his left hand when striking.  This surgery took place days after the Shogun fight in Sao Paulo, Brazil.  Lyoto will return shortly to begin training for his rematch with Rua.  At the time of this writing, the location and date of the rematch have not been finalized.

  1. Dr. MMA Says:

Wishing you a speedy recovery so you can put Shogun in your past. Time to move on to tougher fighters who deserve your time and punishment! Good luck with your training and DO NOT give up your strategy info (of beating Rua) when asked (like the interview on the video), or else a desperate Shogun will take advantage of that information and try to include it with his cheap girly knee kicks. Your loyal fan.

  2. Paul Kitchener, on Says:

Get well soon I know you will beat Rua Even the great Muhammad Ali had unconvincing wins. I know you will be the greatest undefeated fighter in our generation

  3. Mark Says:

get better machida and kick shoguns ass. Will remain your loyal fan win or lose. Your the only fighter with real earned black belts. 2 thumbs up from canada

  4. Julia Says:

I´m your #1 fan. You are the best fighter ever. Keep up the good work. And please kick rua´s ass next time, like you know. Get well and have a full recovery. Greetings from Mexico city.

  5. KO.PREDICTOR Says:

Lyoto, kick Rua out of his shorts:-)He was excellent for sharpening your skills but it’s time to say him good bye via KnockOut:-)

  6. william west Says:

Lyoto, you make real Martial Artists proud all over the world. I saw you wearing your black-belt into the ring with Rua…you are a class-act & should make all MMA fighters realize that learning a little about each martial art is not the same as dedicating to a specific Martial Art. You are showing the world that Karate is the true Martial Art. Fight on!

  7. Ken Silva Says:

    Mr. Machida,

I studied your fight with Shogun in ultra slow motion. I am a karateka, and I fight Muay Thai as well. I teach a class on agnostic fighting (no style, lots of variations for your size and approach). The reason I tell you this is because you won that fight. He beat the crap out of your legs but you did hit scoring areas more. His plan to kill your legs was good but your conditioning prevailed and you were able to absorb it (please don’t next time;-).

You did not seem as crisp. Your tai sabaki was not as precise as you let yourself out of the range too often. He fought his absolute best and you beat him. He will have to fight the same way. My guess is that you will be more prepared (please keep free of media interruptions).

He is the best fighter you will face. Every champion needs someone like him.

I hope you enjoy being a dad. It is a big adjustment. If you choose to open Machida karate and need locations to start, I am interested in talking.

I plan to be in Montreal for your fight.

    Ken

  8. Madjou Says:

Hi , Hope you recover well ! I really like your style and your are a great fighter , hope to see you soon on my TV !

    From a french fan

  9. Jesus Says:

Hope you get a quick full recovery. You are my favorite fighter.

  10. a warrior like machida Says:

hey machida, cant believe im writing to you, i love how ur mind thinks when fighting, you are truly the only warrior with your kind of fighting style, dont worry about the media they talk a lot, and you fought kindly with shogun but the pressure was on as this one was ur first defend of the title with wat you were fighting for, hope for a fast recovery, and get wat you deserve in the upcoming fight with shogun, peace

  11. carlos Says:

machida is the reason i started to watch the ufc since his destruction of rashad evans. as to the fight of shogun just beacuse he didnt destroy him the way we are used to seeing him destroy people dosent mean he didnt win the fight. leg kicks compared to his headshots dont mean jack!!!!!!

  12. carlos Says:

P.S Hope you make a speedy recovery so we can enjoy watching you in the octogon

  13. MMAKansas Says:

Shogun won the first time, and he is going to beat you again.

Your Karate is good, but his Muay Thai is much better. Your gonna experience your first loss and it will be by KO.

Machida is NO Anderson Silva… just a cheap prototype.

  14. Paul Kitchener, on Says:

Mma Kansas got nothing good to say wish machida a good recovery so when he fights a leg lover like rua which I personally think that you don’t know anything about him. And machida is no Anderson silva because he has never lost submitted knocked down watch old previous silva matches machida you will be there just like fedor do not forget the heavyweights (title) only then people like Kansas wnnabe mma will realize your greatness May your karate and dedication take you where no mma champion has done before (Undefeated career)

  15. OneToughMama Says:

Machida – You are the inspiration for why I dedicate myself to my martial art each day. I am a MMA fan, but a martial arts fanatic. I appreciate your dedication and passion for your art and I appreciate the intricate and intelligent manner in which you fight. You are truly a uniquely blessed fighter. Please don’t fall prey to the media and distractions that fame will lure you with. You are an amazing man with wonderful values, as well. God’s blessings with you! With that having been said, go smash Rua this time!!! :-)

  16. Jamie Says:

Lyoto – I am writing from Australia and we love you here too. You will go down as the greatest and I’m sure the reason for this is your grounding in a traditional martial art. You have learned respect and it shows. You are a class above of the rest. You are a champion.

  17. carlos Says:

mma kansas dosent know what hes talking about when mma is scored only on leg kicks it would be a boring sport!!!lyoto is no anderson silva no duh he is the DRAGON the only thing shogun won was the fact that he could barley hang on and not get Knocked Out or tapped out like he did against forest

  18. KO.PREDICTOR Says:

I watched the fight vith Rua many times and it is obvious that Machida won 3:2, Lyoto won first three rounds, when Shogun kicked he always got hit not only with counter punch but also with a following swift inside leg kick from Lyoto, Rua had good strategy to hide being hurt, when he was hurt after Lyoto knees he “attemted” a takedown to hide being hurt.He was in danger in the late third round after punches. He got clear punches from lyoto in the first three rounds.
It was very nice, tactical, fast striking fight.Enjoy watching extra quality fights like that.Respect to both fighters.

  19. loloq Says:

  21. JESSE Says:

Hi Lyoto, ive been a big fan of yours for years, i wish you a speedy recovery, I hope you knockout shogun in your rematch, you beat him in the first one.

  22. Gman Says:

Thankyou for bringing back the true essence of Martial Art to mainstream. You are a true samurai. Don’t worry about what the media and the rumbling of the masses say. Shogun is just a mean for you to perfect your art. Become the Musashi within.

  23. James Says:

Hi Lyoto, I wish you a speedy and complete recovery. I have truly admired your physical skill and tactics in the octagon. You are destined to be a great, long reigning champion; therefore, I know you will use the experiences learned in the match against Shogun to further refine your game and make you even stronger. Much success to you and your family!

  24. Carolyn Says:

Lyoto, I hope that you are recovering well and that you come back stronger then ever. You continue to be my inspiration as well in my own martial arts training. I look forward to seeing you back in your own domain, showing everyone the true strength and beauty of the dragon.

  26. RBart Says:

Lyoto – Because of the classy way you represent the martial arts, your technical skill and your strategic thinking, I follow the UFC and MMA. Without you, I don’t think I would pay very much attention. You are a thinking man’s fighter and I appreciate what you have done for karate and martial arts in general.

I hope you recover quickly and return to the octagon refreshed and invigorated. Win or lose, this fan will remain a fan. Best of luck amigo!

  27. Paul Gale Says:

Hi Lyoto, it’s good to know that your hand is healing ok. I’m sure that you, your father, and the rest of your team are coming up with a good strategy for your rematch in May and just wanted to wish you the best in the time being. Here’s to enjoying your new life as a father and being UFC Light Heavyweight Champion for a long time. I’m a Shotokan Karate Black Belt too, by the way, and train with Sensei Hiroyasu Fujishima (and have trained with Kancho Kanazawa, too). We talk about you in our California dojo and are happy for your success.

  31. Jeff R Says:

Lyoto you are my hero, man.

I know you will beat Rua next time without controversy.

  32. Tshering Dorjee Says:

Lyoto, u rock! You are simply the best (and Anderson Silva). Without you two, UFC will be just another fighting station.

  33. Daviddalo Says:

Good thing youre coming back =) you will beat shogun a second time im sure!! kick some ass lyoto

  34. Ryan Williams Says:

Lyoto, I think I understand the fan craze about you “maybe” losing that fight. You are known to be elusive, hard to fit and hard to figure out in general. Then comes along Rua, who finally hits you which got people really excited that you weren’t as invincible as everyone thought.

So, the psychology of that took over in people’s eyes. They forgot your style of baiting and countering. They were blindsided by the fact that “Machida Got Hit”. People always want to see the invincible warrior get hurt and lose.

Put it this way, Superman was powerful, too powerful that people were losing interest. So, the writers realized this and create Doomsday the only person to defeat Superman. People want to see the invincible warrior get hurt. Period.

You’re still the best in my books!

  35. KO.PREDICTOR Says:

Machida got hit!Machida got hit, Mike!Yes it was a big surprise but there is getting hit and getting hit, Machida WAS NOT hurt, killed legs looks completely different, he WAS NOT dazed after any strike, Lyoto was not in danger but Rua was in danger twice during this clash.

  36. igorbh Says:

  39. Shone Says:

I wish u all the best, u are the GREAT fighter, u r the BEST, i love your style. :)

  40. Gman Says:

Firas Zahabi, GSP coach puts it this way:

…We gotta keep him (GSP) advancing and keep him from repeating the same type of moves and the same type of attacks as usual because people are going to figure him out…

A number one fighter always evolve. Good Luck on May 8th!

  41. Mony Says:

Go Machida!! You can DO IT!!

  42. Sherry Says:

I love to watch you fight. Get well soon so you can be ready to beat Rua in Montreal. I am going just to see you fight. I will pray for a speedy recovery. I can’t wait to finally see you fight live. My husband and I are big fans and hope to meet you.

  43. Dan – Las Vegas, NV Says:

I took Taekwondo when I was young and I really admire how you bring karate to UFC. I love to see you KO muscle-bound guys like Rashad Evans. You remind me of Daniel from Karate Kid. I know you will learn from your last fight with Rua. This time he is going down! Good luck! Best wishes!

  44. Baldini Says:

Does Lyoto check these out, does he respond? Lyoto, I’m your biggest fan in Vegas, people want to hate on you more than guys like GSP who have legitimately and convincingly lost other fights but you are the real dude.
Wins over Tito, Bonner, BJ Penn, Franklin, Rashad and Thiago Silva, those are top fighters.
I’m planning to make a trip to Montreal just to see you put an to all this crap. The last fight wasn’t great for either fighter, but because “you got touched” Shogun is all that?? Apparently. He has beat the best but not the very best, and that’s you so I want to see you
K H T F O next and then send get well cards to his family.

  50. Krastos Says:

  51. Mark Says:

    Lyoto,

My two sons are being introduced to gracie jiu jitsu but I want one of them to have a base of karate. What kind of internship does your family have with my son going to brazil and spending summer in your academy. Please let us know Thanks

  52. Jeff R Says:

Guys, try him on Twitter instead. lyotomachidafw is his name, of course just Search “Lyoto Machida” and you’ll see his logo. He replies semi-regularly.

Mark, I asked him the same thing a few days ago, waiting for a response… I’m looking to train.

  53. robert Says:

lyoto machida. you are a true warrior and i love watching yoou fight, i also love to fight against you in the ufc videogame. i hope get well soon, AND i hope you knock shogun on his ass to stop those on the internet who talk shit about that fight.

  54. gp Says:

Love your style. It reminds me alot of Bruce Lee’s JKD.Good luck on your rematch with Rua and God bless.

  55. Yauchi Says:

I will always bow to The Dragon, the true champion no doubt.

  56. Rafael Hoffman Says:

Wishing you a quick recovery! Let’s show shogun what a real fighter is made: courage, discipline and technique. Did you ever considered opening a Gym through Brazil to teach us some Machida Karate? I’d be there.

  57. enrique velazquez Says:

  58. Don Aldon Says:

I believed that you are the Dragon. The reincarnation of Bruce Lee. I love watching you fight. Wishing you a quick and succesful surgery.

  59. Thomas Says:

  62. Akkenth Says:

    To torcendo por você. abraços.
    Luis

  64. igorbh Says:

    Oss!!!

  65. jason Says:

good luck with the training loyto. I hope it’s a good camp. You can show rau and the world that you are the real champ no questions.. Good luck man can’t wait for the fight..

  66. andrew Says:

speedy recovery man, ive messed my hand up several times, im a karate student myself and these guys aren’t ready for that, hence your record, its the speed, everyone forgets their aint no boxing gloves wrapped around your knuckles so when it hits it hurts, your doing good man, just don’t let the big time get to ya to much please! sponsor this i won that kinda thing…id bow and say son if i could! good luck!

  67. Didi Says:

Hello, I’m glad that I can write to you my appreciation and comments about your fights. You are my favorite fighter. I live in Canada and I compete in judo and I always go for strategy over power and direct approach. There is no doubt that you won your fight with Shogun… I am not a martial artist but. I guess that you can use his own weapon against him the next time and you’ll probably be able to use it better than he did… Plain and simple “kick the crap out of his legs” and then pick him appart. I wish a good training camp and see you in Montreal.
