  1. Michael McStay Says:

    Mr. Machida,
Tonight you were beat. You did not earn the win.
Shogun beat up on your legs and body.
If you were a true practitioner of Karate and respect, you would forfeit the “win”. You knew you were beat, it was apparent in your eyes. The fight was fixed. You were beat at your own timing. Shogun dragged you in from a defensive posture, and then countered your own game. You lost your dignity tonight for accepting something you did NOT earn. Beat the champ… a boxing moto of the 80’s. Nice ice packs.

  2. eric Says:

hi lyoto machida , youre a great champion . but in reality you lost a decision fight against rua. if you are a man of honor , you will relinguish your belt and handed it to the new champ mauricio shogun rua.

    god bless you lyoto…….

  3. Ibby D Says:

lyoto machida is a douchebag……disgrace to samurai spirit………LOSER

  4. JoeG8 Says:

I lost a lot of respect for Machida tonight. When asked who won the fight, he should have said “Shogun Rua.” Same thing happened with Shogun’s brother when he fought Rampage Jackson, but Rampage was man enough to admit defeat when he didn’t deserve to win.

  5. Ana Luísa Valente Says:

Lyoto, parabéns pela luta de ontem! Você merece o cinturão por muito mais tempo. Os karatecas de Curitiba acreditam em você, ganhando ou perdendo. Abraços e boa sorte.

  6. Nagib Says:

In English so everyone can see. I think you won the fight, I saw the fight just like all the referees, 4×1 Lyoto. Cant belive nobody saw Shougun losing balance many times due to your punches and low kicks on his weight leg.

  7. Albert Says:

    Lyoto,

Please allow me to kindly say, “You lost that fight my friend.”

Personally, I would not be able to keep that belt in my house if I did not earn it. Perhaps it means nothing if you did not earn it. Perhaps, it can only bring you shame.

Please don’t allow everyone to know that you received a prize that you did not earn. Everyone is already talking about it. That belt will bring you and the Machida name more shame than any benefit of a fake victory. There’s much more to lose than a belt. It’s your honor, and the honor of your family’s name, and Machida Karate.

I know that you’ve done many, many things to get where you are. You’ve had a great career. However, you shouldn’t add a win to that list of things.

It’s more important to be honorable than to win.

I pray that you find your way back to victory. It’s just a loss. Everyone loses. No journey is perfect even though you may try with all your might to make it so. Again, God bless you on your way back to victory.

    Sola fide,
    Albert

  8. kaneda Says:

I agree with Nagib. Watch the fight without commentary, and suddenly Lyoto seems to do way better. The problem is Joe Rogan and Goldie kept going “OOOHHHH MY GODDDD SHOGUN JUST ROCKEEEED HIMM!!!” when they would have an even exchange and Shogun would eat a few. Really, what did Shogun do that showed him to be the superior fighter? Knee the shit out of his legs? Not enough to win in my opinion.

I honestly think people just expected (myself included) Lyoto to do better, so when he wasn’t doing great, suddenly he’s sucking. Which was not the case.

My question to all those who think Shogun was so clearly the victor, why did he not knock out Lyoto? Why were all his takedown attempts stuffed? I thought Shogun fought awesomely, but I gave Machida the first 3 and 5 (from that last little burst at the end).

And all these people that go “wah wah your dishonorable, give the belt back”, I’d like to see how well you would have done against Shogun. Lyoto did not fight dirty, and did nothing dishonorable. Gotta love armchair experts. Lyoto – you are still the man and embody the samurai spirit.

    The rematch will be awesome.

  9. kaneda Says:

Also if you notice Lyoto gets kneed in the balls and does not even stop the fight. And yet he’s the big dishonorable one??? PLEASEEEE!!!

  10. artelus Says:

Machida won the fight — it was a tough victory, but he won the first three rounds — if you feel like Shogun won that is fine — but Shogun did not go after the belt and no one should insult either fighter — you go and fight! It is easy to say things on the internet — where I am from that is called chicken shit! Both fighters should be proud of a great performance.

  11. Casey Says:

First of all Machida is a true champion. However It’s obvious that Rua was fan favorite going into this fight so it is natural to be upset when your favorite looses a close decision. I watched the fight a 2nd and 3rd time and I must agree with the judges decision the Machida won well fought but very close fight. Heres my take: from watching it again twice there were only two rounds where there was a clear winner 3 for Machida and 5 for Rua, the others were very close (too close). It also felt there was some bias for Rua by the commentators Rogen and Goldberg. Watch rnd 3 when Machida unloades on Rua backing him up against the fence all Rogen could point out the Rua got in 1 right that did nothing, despite the 5 or 6 puches Machida landed and the 3 or 4 he dodged. I give it to Rua that he delivered alot of good body and leg kicks and if the decision were based upon who looks more beat up and the end of the fight he would have won without question. But maybee it’s fair to say Machida shows battle wounds more easily because his body is not used to taking so many shots like that. Machida landed some good body kick and some knees which may have been just as hard as Rua’s but Rua just took them better (Rua’s rib cage was a little red also). Rua may have bruised Machida and scratched his lip but he did not do enough in the judges minds to win a title fight that close. Here are the reasons 1- on his few attemts to take Machida down he was unsuccessful. 2- If you watch the fight again you’ll see that Rua was not the aggressor the entire fight like many see it (even myself at first) they were both equally aggressive. 3- the only thing he brought were leg and body kicks and almost every hard body kick by Rua was countered with a puch or kick from Machida. and 4- Rua never hurt Machida or put him in serious danger. unlike Machidas attack in rnd 3. (that may have been the exchange that won the fight). You cant be the contender in a title fight and expect to win such a close dicision. You have to finish the fight with authority by KO or submission or dominate in such a wat that there is no question in the judges mind that you are the true champ and Rua simply did not do that. If anyone is to blame it is himself for listening to his coaches for telling him he was winning the fight. What a buch of crap. You never tell your fighter he’s winning such a close fight. Rua should fire his corner. That is why he lost the fight he was holding back and being too careful. He made some errors in judgement. If the fight were to go more rounds Rua clearly had more in his tank to spare. He should have let it all hang out. I don’t think he’ll make the same mistake in Machida vs. Rua 2. Frankly I’m disappointed in him and all the other Rua fans that feel he was robbed and cheated. I think they are being poor lossers by blaming the ufc and the judges of calling a close fight like they should have. If the decision were split I could understant the dissapointment a little more but the decision wa unanimous we all need to get over it and move on to the rematch.

  12. sam Says:

machida is the champion beat shogun at his own game and a rematch will make no difference

  13. Kenpo Kai Says:

Dishonor?? Samurai??? Lost Respect???Clearly comments from individuals with NO martial arts background or knowledge!!! The last two people that have commented at least explain their views of the fight and I agree whole heartedly!!! And regarding Lyoto handing over his belt?? Thats Bullshit!!! Good luck!!! Belts are earned not given away!!! Get off the champ’s back and think before you write crap!!!!!

  14. fabiano santos , brasil Says:

PARABENS LYOTO ,VI SUA LUTA SOU FÃ DE MMA DESDE DO COMEÇO E TUSO ISSO QUE ESTÃO FALANDO SOBRE A SUA LUTA, É MENTIRA SÓ QUE OS 3 PRIMEIROS ROUNDS VÇ GANHOU, E AREGRA É CLARA NO UFC , NÃO BASTA PARTIR PRA CIMA OS GOLPES QUE ELE ACERYOU MUITOS ENTRARAM,MAS AS JOELHADAS E JOGO DELE ANULADO FOI VISTO PELOS JUIZES E OS SEUS GOLPES FORAM MAIS CONTUDENTES

  15. Nezumi Says:

To upset the champion, a challenger must do one of three things: knock him out, submit him, or totally dominate him. Mr. Rua did none of the three; therefore, in accordance with the age old tradition, the dicision went to the champion. Nothing new; it’s just the way it’s done. True, Mr. Rua was in top form, and Mr. Machida did not live up to the impossibly high expectations his fans placed on him. Nonetheless, it was too close a fight to name a new title-holder. Personally, I’m honored (and a little vindicated) to see a fellow karate-ka succeeding in the UFC. I enjoy seeing superior tactics, defensive strategy, and scientific fighting displayed in the octagon, even if it is to the chagrin of impatient and less astute fans. Keep up the great work, Machida-san!

  16. Mychal Says:

Again MACHIDA your the greatest. great fight!!

  17. Calum Ross Says:

Anyone who is formally trained in martial arts or combat sports will understand the difference between landing a blow and landing a blow in a more strategically difficult spot to strike. In the traditional world of real martial arts fighting people understand the merits of a point system and accordingly why higher points are awarded for strategically more difficult points to strike and points of the body that are more tactical.

I find it amazing how many ‘couch patatos’ who watch UFC, have no formal combat training, and understand nothing about the actual points awarding and referee system offer their opinion. It is a little like someone who knows nothing about collector art work offering their value, while they are indeed entitled to their opinion – ulitmately their opinion means little or nothing to those who actually have an educated opinion.

I am a senior brown belt (1st Kyu) in Shotokan Karate and have trained martial arts in total for over 5 years – and I am not skilled enough to challenge the judgement of formally trained referees who make a living at judgements in such matters. So – while it is great to see widespread input … as a general rule you are better to keep your opinion to yourself unless it is acutally an educated opionion. Let’s leave judgements and decisions to those who are qualified to give it.

    Sincerely,
    Calum Ross

  18. Sugar Rey Says:

Machida wins.. Shogun did not totally dominate machida.. only the men who poractice martial arts with real spirit can see the strikes of lyoto machida. Shogun did not even hit Machida sold strike to the face. in order to be the Champion you need to put the champion i KNOCKDOWN!!!! like Machida did to Evans.. Does Shogun knock machida down????? Did he hit the champion with a solid strike to the face???? So he Shogun does not have the rightful honor to be the champion… To Shogun CONVINCED US!!! if you really deserve to be the champion KNOCK him down or Machida will knock you down to be a Champion… You people give lot of coment about Machida SHUT UP!!!! NOBODY HAS KNOCK MACHIDA DOWN YET!!!! NO ONE!!! SHOGUN??? his like a kid afraid of ghost covering his face in the whole match….. DONT YOU SEE HIS AFRAID TO MACHIDA?????

  19. Eric Says:

Machida won against Shogun, that’s what the judges have seen, same as I do. Machida controls the fight. Shogun is afraid, so he uses only the kick to the legs to avoid Machida, but it’s only a secondary “points” rather than an attack a “points” to the face. But definitely, knocking out an opponent is the paramount goal. But remember, this is a decision game to be judge upon.

  20. FrankenSensei Says:

To the 3 morons at the top of the page with their disgusting attacks on a fighter who gives his all to entertain the masses- blow it out your ass!!
Machida won the first three rounds- it was very close but he won. The fourth round was a draw. Rua clearly won the fifth round. Rua had about 7 unsuccessful takedown attempts. That gives Machida 7 successful takedown defenses, no matter how many knees he took to the legs. If Rua chopped down Machidas legs so bad, how come he was still missing so many kicks and Machida was still dancing away and landing?? Rua couldn’t even take Machida down after he slipped and fell. How many times did Machida catch Rua in the air wtih straight lefts or rights to the chin?? How many knees did he deliver to the body of Rua. Even in the fifth round, Machida was so gassed, yet he gave a knee to the gut and face of Rua (at 2:45 remaining) that was devastating. Count how many kicks of Rua went SWISH…he landed a lot, but he missed a hell of a lot. And don’t forget these fighters two used to train together at Chute academy, so Rua knew Lyoto’s moves a lot better than other previous fighters.
The two guys respected each other, did not talk trash, and so the ignorant fans spewing all that hate should take a lesson from that. They are both great and classy fighters and I knew Rua would be the Dragon’s toughest test. Machida, Rua, and Gegard are the three best at 205 (Anderson Silva would be the best if he stayed at 205). Machida does not need to give up anything. Rua wouldn’t expect him to or respect him if he did. That is absolutely stupid to suggest it. It was a hard fought battle by both guys, and anyone with an understanding of the arts would know that. Let the rematch settle it.

  21. lyoto fan Says:

lyoto is the man!!!! rua should have taken it!!! rematch, lyoto kicks rua’s ass again!!!!

  22. lyoto fan Says:

    123 are idiots!!!!!

  23. dover89 Says:

the rematch will say everything Rua won’t stand a chance. I respect all ufc fighters simply because they work hard at what they do and we as fans and not as fighters have no clue about judging.

  24. Phenomejon2 Says:

You all are idiots saying machida got beat. to be a champion, you have to beat the champion. Not by some pussy little leg kicks. And those kicks never even came close to knocking lyoto down or anything. machida countered those kicks with good punches. MACHIDA IS THE BEST!

  25. jonathan arroyo Says:

This goes to all of you Lyoto Machida haters. He’s the best light-heavyweight champion that UFC’s ever had. Why don’t you go out there and do what this guy has done and is doing for you people to say that he’s a loser, you guys don’t even know what your talking about.
    You guys are losers.
    Your #1 FAN

  26. pipoargentina Says:

  27. GT Says:

There are a lot of MMA fans who start boing 30 seconds into a fight if the two combatants are not standing toe to toe exchanging leather.

These are the guys that have never been in a ring themselves, probably never got into a fight in their life.

Some people call that boring, but we’ve all seen the 30 second knockouts. Isn’t it a little more interesting watching two highly skilled fighters playing a chessmatch for two or three rounds until someone makes a mistake and the other capitalizes?

All of these fighters know that their opponents only need one opening to turn their lights out. The objective is to win the fight, not take a lot of punishment.

Not getting hit is a GOOD strategy, that’s why Lyoto is the champion and has defended his title. I want to see more fights that are more about tactics and skill, not brawling streetfights.

The guys that take a lot of punishment don’t last long in this sport.

  28. Thiago Says:

Sou de sp, e dou o maior apoio ao lyoto, serio ele é o melhor lutador do brasil, vai ser dificil tira o cinturao dele!

  29. troy Says:

please. machida lost the fight. i watched it very closely and the screaming commentary did not affect what i had seen in the octagon. rua continually beat upon machida all through the fight. for those of you who say that those who think rua won the fight are inexperienced and couch fighters, what about the judge who came forward and said that the machida decision was a mistake. how do you account for that? so, it seems that those of us who say rua kicked the crap out of machida are right. please google “ref admits that rua won the machida fight” and you will see the same comments by the judge. so, if one of the judges is now admitting that rua won the fight, how are those of us who say rua “won” that fight wrong? defend machida ll you want but the culprit in the end was an improper viewing angle for the judges. once again, read the comments of the judge before you post comments about how machida won. the judges were wrong and so are you. rua won, hands down.

  30. Yauchi Says:

I watched this fight 5 times Machida won all rounds. Last round was 4 true fight fans and to all haters get a 65in HDTV calibrated. Shoguns kicks missed Machidas fists dominated(DUMBASSES)!!! U r a true inspiration to me and for any true fighter Machida San. I am wheelchair bound and u give me strength, I bow my head to the Dragon, the true champion. Get Well In Good Time. My hope And prayers are with u, Champion!
